Best Car Documentary Film – Funny Car Summer

funnycar2Ok, so the editing wasn’t the greatest and the camera work sucked, but this 1974 documentary gives us a behind the scenes look at what racing use to be about before the big sponsers took over.

The movie chronicles the trials and tribulations of  Dunn family as former fireman Jim Dunn makes an attempt at joining the Funny Car circuit with his rear engine 73 Cuda.

I must admit I’m a bit prejudice when it comes to the 73 Cuda.  It was my big brother’s first car and a favorite of mine.  The first car I ever raced was my brother’s 73 Cuda and the memories of that car are still some of my favorites.

Best Black and White Car Movie – Thunder Road

Best Black and White Car Movie – Thunder Road

With all the slick CGI and special effects used in today’s super car movies, we sometimes forget about the simple awesome stunt driving of  the great Carey Loftin in movies like Thunder Road.

Thunder Road also actually had a plot and the incredible Robert Mitchum in his prime.

The rumors have long been circulating  that the “shine” cars were bought from actual Carolina Moonshiners.

The 1950′s Ford and the 1957 Ford both are pushed to their limits and show some cool modifications.

The 1957 Chevy cop car had the added feature of being able to grab the rear bumper of the suspect vehicle.  Definitely, a cool addon

The movie is so good, you forget it’s in black and white.

Best Drive-In Car Movie – Two Lane Blacktop

Best Drive-In Car Movie – Two Lane Blacktop

twolaneblacktop

The 1970′s were the heyday of the Drive-In movie.  It was a time were summer fun meant parties at the local Drive-In.  Who cares that the stupid sound boxes never worked or that the screen was always fuzzy.  It was never really about the movie anyway.

One of the best years for great car movies has to be 1971.  It was the year of Vanishing Point and our best Drive-In movie, “Two Lane Blacktop”.

A great drive-in movie has to have two things.

  1. Great car racing
  2. No messy plot or stories to get in the way of the great car racing.

Two Lane delivers on both accounts.  The movie didn’t require you to know anything about the characters, not even their names.  You could watch the whole movie without sound and not miss a thing.

For my friends it was party time until a race scene … then we hollered at the screen edging on our favorite car.  Once the race was over it was back to the party until the next race scene.

How perfect can a movie get..  Great action … no pesky plot.

I think it had a couple of  B-list actors but no one remembers who they were.   Of course it also had “The Ultimate 55 Chevy and 70′s GTO, that we all remember.
