Mustang Sally is to Blues as Stairway to Heaven is to Rock and Roll

There is no doubt, at some time or another, you have heard a song written in 1965 by Mack Rice, and then covered in 1966 by Wilson Pickett, called Mustang Sally. Wilson Pickett actually had greater success with the song. Since then, countless blues artists and bands have covered this song, so much so that it has led John Lee Hooker’s Boom Boom Room to post a sign prohibiting any artist or band to perform the song. This is not unlike the signs that many guitar stores posted in the 1980′s to discourage people from using their equipment to play Stairway to Heaven.
