Cars are part of the cast in movies these days. There have been times when some movies have featured cars that will forever remain historical. Great car movies have been many over the years but some are just exceptional. These were the kind of cars that totally distracted the audience in theatres from the actual movie to the cars used by the main cast. Instead of listening to the dialogue or following the plot, there are times you will just watch the car and be lost in imagination. This is especially so when the impressive cars are caught up in thrilling car chases.

Actually, the obsession of classy cars in movies is an Americans heritage. The 1967’s ‘Gone in 60 Seconds’ is one of the great car movies that will forever remain in our mind. The car in these movies was a 1967 model of Ford Mustang Shelby GT 500, the fastback. Staring Nicolas Cage, the automobile took over the movie and made a lasting impression of the American youth. There was no review at the time of release that did not applaud the car and the car’s dominant personality.

Another great car movie, which becomes so great because of the squealing tires and screaming engines, is ‘Bullitt’. The Steve McQueen classic was launched during the muscle car era. It had a whooping 400-horse power and seeing it cut hills and streets of San Francisco in one of the best car chases ever caught on film. Another great car movie is the 1971 cult classic ‘Vanishing Point’, Staring Barry Newman in a character role of Kowalski, the task was to drive a marvellous car, Dodge Challenger to San Francisco all the way to Denver in 15 hours flat. Though the car was a post-Easy Rider flair, the chase sequences are spectacular especially against a backdrop of western state’s open territory.

‘Smokey and the Bandit’ is another Burt Reynolds movie. But this one made him the biggest Hollywood star of the late 1970′s. The most impressive part comes when this bandit runs the Trans Am and leaves behind a series of destroyed cop cars Texas to Georgia.
